The portable blogger's office

I don't have a desk. If I'm on a computer at home, it is likely to be on a couch (yes, I know-terrible for posture, but I have no other choice). While I have thought about acquiring one-there is something modernly romantic about a surface with a huge-ass monitor, pens and papers and coffee mugs lying around-ultimately, I can't figure out how to free up enough space. I could get a larger place, my own apartment for example, but when I think about where I would rather have my several hundred dollars of extra money go, I decide against it. Instead, I use my saved funds for what I call my "traveling office". A lightweight laptop means that moving my work is as easy as going to the baker to buy a baguette-I just need to haul my ass out of bed and get to a venue with seating, desks, and preferably double espressos. Coffee shops are a dependable source of high dosages of caffeine, work-appropriate background music, and professional interior design, all of which adds up to a great work environment. No need to sit on the same chair or have the same window view every day-there is a world of different workspaces out there, and I'm going to try them all!

The home office is a wonderful setup for those creatures of habit-beings who have the same breakfast every day, know what they order before they step into the diner, freak out if the their grocery store is out of their brand of bread. The idea of the same things to stare at every day does not frighten them, but gives them the content of being entirely in control of this aspect of their lives. This lifestyle has zero appeal to me. I become jittery after even a full day of seeing the same scenery, smelling the same scents, hearing the same background noise. Working overtime is torture to me mainly because after 8 hours of the same screen and surroundings, I just want to run out of there as fast as my feet and Hyundai will take me. I need new stimuli to keep my senses alive and working, putting two and two together to create a different kind of four. While most of us have little control over our corporate work environments, what we do outside of work is our own choice. So why not choose to step outside, eavesdrop on some new conversations, look outside to a new view, listen to different background music, and maybe get your brainwaves of a different length?

Do you guys prefer blogging at home or outside of the house?

  5. This is a great post - you've got a pretty cool writing style. Personally, I blog anywhere, anytime. Sometimes it's from my dorm room or common area (or basement), or it might be in one of the buildings I have class in (or several of them, since I occasionally start one while I'm sitting around in one area before a class, and finish it in another). I understand getting bored with the same scenery every day... I just decided not to live with a bunch of the people I lived with this year, because even though they're my friends, it's always the same - we were even going to live on the same floor again! - and I like to have sporadic amounts of chaos and mayhem in my life. Having a neat and organized workspace sounds lovely, but I've tried it, and it gets messy and I get bored with it almost immediately, so it's probably never going to be a serious thing in my life.

  8. I concentrate more when I am not at home & tend to get a lot more posts written. Also being outside of a place you know well can really help with inspiring ideas. However that being said there is nothing more wonderful that blogging whilst being curled up warn under a blanket with a cup of tea in you own home!
